The Jack F. Ealy Science Journalism Workshop is a forum for professional training on topics related to science, technology, health, and sustainable development, organized since 2004 by the Fundación Ealy Ortiz A.C. and EL UNIVERSAL, with the participation of more than 420 specialists, researchers, Nobel Prize winners, entrepreneurs, and government officials who are experts in science, public health, technology and innovation, and the environment.

Over the past 13 years, the Fundación Ealy Ortiz A.C. has awarded more than 1,550 scholarships to journalists from 512 media organizations from countries throughout Latin America. Journalists have participated in 35 workshops in four editions -- Latin America, Europe, Mexico and UNAM – to develop a more accessible transfer of information and have a positive impact on the implementation of public policy in the region.

In 2004, the Fundación Ealy Ortiz A.C. organized the first Latin American Edition of the Jack F. Ealy Science Journalism Workshop, which since its inception has taken place at the University of California, San Diego.

The Mexico Edition was first offered in 2009 and has been held in Mexico City, Tamaulipas, Yucatán, Veracruz, Aguascalientes, Morelos, and Hidalgo. In 2016, the Mexico Edition was part of the working agenda of the 2017 CDMX and Tlaxcala C40 Mayors Summit: Cities Leading Climate Action.

In 2011, the Spanish Edition was born, jointly organized with the Asociación Iberoamericana de la Comunicación (ASICOM) and the Universidad de Oviedo. In 2016, it was transformed into the European Edition.

In 2013, in alliance with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, the UNAM Edition was offered for the first time.

As a result of the experience gained from the workshops, a Master’s Degree in Communication with a specialization in Science Journalism was created in 2014 at the UNAM School of Sciences, which by the end of 2017 will have 12 graduated students.

On October 25, 2017, the Jack F. Ealy Science Journalism Workshop -- Latin American Edition will bring together 60 journalists from 11 Latin American and Caribbean countries, in addition to participants from the United States, the UK and Spain in collaboration with the 10th World Conference of Science Journalists in San Francisco, California. The international event will host more than 1400 professionals from 70 counties engaged in the communication of science. From October 25 to 30, 2017, they will explore state-of-the-art science breakthroughs, as well as critical global issues that bridge science and society.

The 2017 World Conference of Science Journalism will promote education, professional development and exposure to world-class science and technology, essential for strengthening a worldwide community of science journalists. The aim is to guarantee that science reporting is timely, accurate and truthfully transmitted to a global audience, with special emphasis on the strengthening of science journalism in Latin America in a coordinated effort with the Fundación Ealy Ortiz A.C., InquireFirst, and EL UNIVERSAL.
